An absolute howler by Betis and stout defending allowed Atletico Madrid to book their place in the Copa del Rey semifinals
Atletico Madrid defender masterfully for 90 minutes and took advantage of a horrible moment of mis-communication between the Real Betis goalkeeper and a defender to advance to the Copa del Rey semifinals. Atleti will now face Sevilla for the right to play for the cup.
Real Betis were on a mission in the first to try and get the first goal...mission not accomplished. It wasn't for a lack of trying though as Betis bombarded the Atletico Madrid defense for 45 minutes but only looked dangerous once. Atleti deserves credit for playing very well and keeping their formation tight and organized.
That previously mentioned most of danger from Betis came in the 35th minute when Rubén got his head on a cross that was whipped in from the right. His effort went well wide, which was unfortunate for Betis since he had Thibaut Courtois froze.
One minute before halftime Betis completely shot themselves in the foot. Atleti launched a long ball down the pitch that was chased down by Betis defender Antonio Amaya and headed back towards his own goal. The only problem is that goalkeeper Casto was charging the long ball down as well and the two nearly collided allowed Diego Costa to easily put the ball in the empty net. The goal put Atleti ahead 1-0 (3-0 on aggregate) at halftime.
Better than the goal itself was beIN Sport commentator Bodo Illgner describing the goal by saying, "As the Americans say, s*** happens." I might have a new favorite commentator.
Not much to discuss from the second half really as it was basically a clone of the first. Betis attacked and Atletico defended well limiting their chances and never really looking in danger of allowing the Béticos back in the match. It really was a masterful performance from Atleti who stifled every idea that Betis had and gave them basically no openings to exploit.
Betis were awarded a penalty on a questionable call in the 90th minute. Jorge Molina scored, ruining Courtois' clean sheet streak and giving us a final score of 1-1. Atletico Madrid wins the tie 3-1 on aggregate.
