A thrilling match at the HSH Nordbank Arena saw Hamburg fight back from an early 1-0 deficit against Werder Bremen to take all the points with an impressive 3-2 win.
The visitors took an early lead on a corner kick, taking advantage of some slack marking to score a superb goal. Assani Lukimya-Mulongoti got himself turned around in the penalty area but somehow managed to strike the ball with the back oh his head, off the base of Rene Alder's post, and in to make it 1-0 Bremen.
Hamburg's reply was equally brilliant. Heung-Min Son carved himself some space on the left and drove into the penalty area, and, with the defence expecting a cutback, the 20-year-old saw his opportunity and opted to shoot. The result was a rocket, fired into Sebastian Mielitz's top corner before the Bremen keeper could so much as flinch.
The hosts weren't just back in the game, they were taking real control, and despite Kevin de Bruyne coming close to reestablishing Bremen's lead when he flashed an effort inches wide in the dying stages of the first half, it was HSV who'd score the next two goals. A defensive mix-up on a cross allowed Dennis Aogo to tap home from close range, and then another cross (and an error by the assistant referee) saw an obviously-offside Artjoms Rudnevs bring the score to 3-1.
But rather than melt down, the visitors fought back, and Sokratis' well-taken goal in the 54th minute brought them right back into the game. They'd have leveled in style seconds later had de Bruyne's diving header been on target rather than floated over the bar. But ultimately, Bremen couldn't find the net again, and after an entertaining final half-hour which saw chances at both ends of the pitch as well as a red card issued to Clemens Fritz, Hamburg emerged with all three points.
