Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of soon to be out-of-contract midfielder Lewis Holtby from Schalke. Which is crazy (crazy awesome if you're a Spurs fan):
We're delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Lewis Holtby to join the Club in July from Schalke, subject to medical #COYS— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) January 4, 2013
Schalke have been playing all season with two of their brightest stars set to leave at the end of the year, and although most eyes were on Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the Dutch centre forward signed a contract extension in late December. Lewis Holtby, a superb 22-year-old attacking midfielder, did not, and he then announced that he'd be leaving the club this summer.
And now his destination is clear. Make no mistake, this is a real coup for Spurs, who've acquired one of the best young attackers in the Bundesliga for what is presumably not very much money. With Rafael van der Vaart gone and Gylfi Sigurdsson disappointing in his first year at the club, Holtby could be just the tonic that they need come July 1st.
