Deportivo La Coruña kicked off 2013 with a massive upset of Malaga while Levante added to Athletic Bilbao's misery, downing Marcelo Bielsa's side 3-1
Enjoy a wrap-up of today's action from La Liga.
Levante 3-1 Athletic Bilbao
Aritz Aduriz got Athletic off to a flying start with a goal in the 6th minute but it was all downhill from there for Marcelo Bielsa's side. First Christian Lell equalized for Levante in the 26th minute with a missile shot then Athletic's Aymeric Laporte was sent off for denying Roger a goal scoring opportunity.
Levante wasted not time taking advantage of the red card as Vicente Iborra scored with a header off a set piece right before halftime to evaporate Bilbao's lead. Nabil El Zhar added a third for Levante scoring off another set piece in the 69th minute.
Thanks to Malaga's shocking loss at Deportivo, Levante moves within one point of fourth place.
Granada vs Valencia
Los Che rallied with two second goals to earn the full three points away to Granada. The home side played for nearly an hour with only 10-men after Mikel Rico was shown a second yellow card for a handball, a call that seemed extremely harsh. Despite the disadvantage, Grenada took the lead in the 50th minute when Brayan Angulo scored on a looping volley over Valencia's Diego Alves.
The lead quickly evaporated though nine minutes later as Jonas scored on a header of a Pablo Piatti corner. Piatti scored the winner in the 82nd minute, redirecting a Roberto Soldado cross in to the empty net.
Deportivo La Coruña vs Malaga
Deportivo's fight for survival took a massive step in the right direction with a 1-0 upset of Malaga. It's a dream start for new manager Domingos Paciência who leads Depor to only their third win of the season in his first match in charge. Despite being out shot and dominated in possession Depor played a great match frustrating Malaga with solid defending and the requisite amount of luck.
Pizzi scored the match winner in the 59th minute, sending a cross box shot from left side of the Malaga box into the upper right corner of Wilfredo Caballero's goal.
Sevilla 1-0 Osasuna
Emir Spahic scored in the 83rd minute to give Sevilla an important victory over Osasuna. Considering the volume of shots his team produced, head coach Míchel González will likely be pleased with the points but not completely thrilled with his team's performance.
The win temporarily bumps Sevilla up to 12th place while Osasuna plummets all the way to the bottom of the table.
