Shortly after signing a contract extension that will keep him in Dortmund through 2016, BVB defender Neven Subotic will be on the sidelines for the next six weeks after injuring his calf on Saturday during the club's winter training in La Manga, Spain.
Subotic, 24, suffered a tear in the calf muscle on his right leg during training. The initial projection was that he would only be out for two weeks, but a MRI showed more extensive damage. He'll remain with the squad in Spain as he begins his rehabilitation.
Felipe Santana will replace Subotic in the starting eleven until the Serbian returns. U-19 defender Koray Günter could also find himself making the bench.
Even though the Bundesliga doesn't resume until January 19, Subotic can be expected to miss three to four weeks of league matches including a trip to Bayer Leverkusen. Depending on the speed of his recovery, the DFB Pokal quarterfinal match against Bayern Munich and the first leg of BVB's Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk could be in jeopardy.
