Europa League Thursdays in Europe may not reach the interest levels that Champions League days get, but it certainly can't top the sheer number of games played on a single day. Not sure if that's something to celebrate but it's the best I have.
In the early games, a late red card and goal kept Liberec from closing the gap on first place Sevilla as the Spanish side holds a two-point lead in Group H despite today's draw. Wins for Lyon and Real Betis kept them tied at the top of Group I while Tottenham opened up a commanding five-point advantage in Group K thanks to their victory over Sheriff Tiraspol.
The late games on the schedule saw Swansea City stay at the top of Group A despite allowing a late equalizer against Kuban Krasnodar. The result allowed Valencia to close within a point of the group lead. Wigan Athletic remained unbeaten in group play, coming from behind to earn a draw against Rubin Kazan. Fiorentina looked strong again as well, seeing off Pandurii Targu-Jiu, 3-0.
SV Salzburg's 2-1 win over Standard Liege gets the award for strange match fact of the day as the two teams combined for as many red cards as goals (3).
