Juventus vs. Catania, final score 4-0: Easy peasy pumpkin pie

Valerio Pennicino

The elefanti put up almost no resistance in Turin on Wednesday night, allowing the Old Lady to put four past -- and sending themselves sliding into the relegation zone once more.

It couldn't have been simpler for Juventus. Two goals in the first half, two goals in the second, from four different goalscorers, all while Catania put up little to no resistance. The three points keep them even with Napoli on points, while both sides wait for Chievo Verona to pull off a miracle against AS Roma on Thursday night.

The first half brought little in the way of surprises -- in fact, bookies likely don't offer much return on a bet choosing Juventus to be ahead 2-0 at the interval. Again, the first goal came from Arturo Vidal, although it was from open play this time around. The Chilean got on the end of a ball from Carlos Tévez and immediately entered into a ferocious game of pinball. The ball bounced off Tiberio Guarente first, then Alexis Rolín, leaving Mariano Andújar wrong-footed and unable to rescue.

The second goal came via a lovely free kick from -- who else? -- Andrea Pirlo. The maestro curled one of his trademark shots up and over the Catania wall, nestling into the net somewhere behind Andújar.

Strangely enough, Juventus didn't stop scoring after two goals. To be fair, Catania, who had just one attempt in the first half -- a blocked shot from Gonzalo Bergessio -- did step it up after the restart. Pablo Álvarez went close after a free kick, just after Bergessio saw another attempt saved. Sergio Almirón had a shot blocked, and Guarente sent a shot wide. It seemed that the elefanti had a chance to get back in the match ... until Tévez put in his own goal, of course, grabbing a ball from Fernando Llorente and dribbling round Andújar.

Catania did give it one more try, with Bergessio seeing his shot blocked once more. Less than a minute later, Leonardo Bonucci got his head on the end of a ball from Sebastian Giovinco and knocked in Juve's fourth goal. The visitors gave up, letting the Old Lady pepper Andújar's goal. All that was left to complete the rout was a sending off ... which occurred in the 84th minute, when Guarante got a second yellow. The elefanti misery complete, they slunk off back home, slipping under Bologna and back into the relegation zone.
