Eugenio Corini's second reign at Chievo has started in the best possible way - with the win over their city rivals. A goal from Dejan Lazarevic in the final seconds of the Derby della Scala put an end to Verona's perfect home start to the season and cast doubt over whether the side will slip out of Serie A this season. The game was hardly entertaining, but the dramatic ending almost made up for the first 90 minutes.
Everything worth mentioning in the first half happened in the first five minutes. Hellas started very aggressively, creating the first and, as it turned out their only, chance in the first half in the third minute. Luca Toni passed the ball to Juan Iturbe inside the penalty area, but Ivan Radovanovic managed to close him down before he could test Christian Puggioni.
Only two minutes later, Chievo had the ball in the back of the net. Boukary Dramefound Bostjan Cesar inside the six yard box and the Slovenian took advantage, firing his shot off the crossbar and into the back of the net. The goal, however, was flagged for offside, although replays showed it should have stood. The first half also saw Cesar as the target of a penalty appeal, but the referee, perhaps thinking to balance things out, judged his outstretched arm to be involuntary contact.
The second half saw Hellas fired up, pressing and keeping Chievo pinned in their half. The Flying Donkeys continued playing the game their way: compact and disciplined at the back, keeping shape at all times, and looking for space to hit the opponent on the break. Chievo had two fine chances to score in the half, but Cyril Thereau was too slow to shoot after a great dribble around Vangelis Moras, while Ivan Radovanovic's shot from the edge of the area missed the target by only few centimeters.
Ultimately, though, the Flying Donkeys found their goal, and at the sweetest possible moment: the 92nd minute. Hetemaj's cross from the left found Lazarevic in the middle of the penalty area, and the Slovene's powerful shot secured a last-minute Derby victory for Chievo.
