Boca Juniors have a lot of work to do defensively. A couple of days after they let in two goals domestically, they let in two more in a loss to Toluca in Copa Libertadores.
Sinha, the legendary Toluca playmaker, is old. He's had a tough start to the season for the Red Devils, because he is old, and he's recently been dropped from the Mexico team by "Chepo" Jose Manuel de la Torre, his former coach who loves him and who also has an old man fetish. For all intents and purposes, Sinha's career appeared to be coming to an end.
Somehow, he found new life on Tuesday night. He put in a man of the match performance against Boca Juniors at La Bombonera, assisting both of his team's goals in an unlikely 2-1 victory.
With Juan Roman Riquelme out -- he's just re-signed and is working his way back to fitness -- Boca lacked creativity on the night. However, it didn't take any creativity to create an early penalty. In the 22nd minute, Diego Novaretti took down Lautaro Acosta in the area, and Santiago Silva stepped up to bury the spot kick.
Toluca didn't do much in the first half, but eventually figured out how to exploit Boca's high line in the second. Sinha spotted a run by Carlos Esquivel in the 57th minute, and hit him with a brilliant diagonal ball to set up the goal. Clemente Rodriguez was caught napping, and stepped up too late to keep Esquivel onside. On the second goal, in the 72nd minute, Matias Caruzzo and substitute Lisandro Magallan were the men at fault. They let Edgar Benitez split them on a run onto a chipped pass by Sinha, and Benitez finished brilliantly by chipping Agustin Orion.
There are five games left to play for both teams in the group stage, but Toluca will like their chances to advance in the Libertadores after they got their hardest match out of the way early, and grabbed three points from it to boot.
