Wigan Athletic vs. Huddersfield Town, FA Cup Fifth round: Final Score 1-4, Latics make light work of Terriers

Laurence Griffiths

Wigan secured a comfortable win away at Huddersfield Town despite naming a weakened side, with Arouna Kone bagging a brace to help sink the Terriers.

Wigan were intent on keeping the ball on the ground despite the rough pitch, and took a deserved lead 30 minutes in, when Callum McManaman went on a run down the left before firing a brilliant finish into the roof of the net.

Shortly afterwards, Wigan doubled their advantage as the hosts continued to struggle. McManaman was involved again, dribbling into space from the left before cutting the ball back for Jordi Gomez. The Spaniard's shot was saved, but Arouna Kone was in hand to score a tap-in and give his side a comfortable lead.

Huddersfield responded with an attacking change, bringing on Lee Novak and James Vaughan at half-time, and the latter almost mounted the comeback as Ronnie Stam gave the ball away in defence and he pounced to fire in an effort on goal, but Joel Robles saved well.

Huddersfield were coming back into the game, but then a killer move from Wigan decided it after James McArthur scored a rare goal. The Scot played a one-two with Gomez on the edge of the area before lashing an unstoppable effort into the top corner to put the Latics out of sight.

Huddersfield reduced the deficit soon afterwards, Calum Woods, the best player for the home side, sending in a fine cross which Lee Novak planted past Robles with a strong header. James Vaughan also came close as the home side looked to mount an unlikely comeback, but as time wore on, they could not score again and Arouna Kone got his second goal of the day, taking full advantage of a horrendous mistake from Anthony Gerrard, who slipped while collecting the ball from his goalkeeper.
