Update: South Africa out of Africa Cup of Nations, Mali advance on penalties
What looked like it was going to be a comfortable shutout victory for South Africa has turned into a very even match in Durban. Bafana Bafana gave away a goal in the second half, and they're headed to extra time with Mali in their Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal match.
Tukelo Rantie opened the scoring in the 31st minute, finishing off a counter attack, assisted by Thuso Phala with a low square ball. South Africa had been playing well up until that point, and the goal was a well-deserved one. Mali veteran Seydou Keita unexpectedly fired his team back into the game in the 58th minute, muscling his way through defenders before applying a calm finish.
There is no golden goal rule in Africa Cup of Nations, much like other tournaments. The extra time rules are standard. The teams will play two 15-minute periods of extra time to completion, and if the match is tied at the end of 120 minutes, the teams will go to penalties.
