Liverpool vs. Tottenham Hotspur: Final score 3-2; Spurs drop vital three points

Clive Brunskill

Liverpool came from behind to beat Spurs 3-2 at Anfield.

Despite a shaky start, Liverpool managed to grab the lead over Tottenham Hotspur in the 21st minute with an absolutely brilliant goal. Sublime skill from Coutinho allowed Jose Enrique to wriggle free and put Luis Suarez through on goal. The Uruguayan's first-time finish surprised Hugo Lloris, fizzing underneath the goalkeeper to give the Reds a 1-0 lead.

The hosts were now clearly on top, and should have extended their lead on several occasions. But they didn't, and were made to pay on the stroke of halftime. Jan Vertonghen managed to get on the end of a free kick to bring the Spurs to level pegging in first half stoppage time, and Liverpool were stunned just after the break when the centre back managed to repeat his goalscoring heroics from yet another free kick.

But his good work was undone thanks to a hilariously poor back pass from Kyle Walker, who hung Lloris out to dry by putting him in a position to be absolutely pantsed by Stewart Downing. The former Villa man burst past Tottenham's goalkeeper before nutmegging Benoit Assou-Ekotto on the line to bring the score back to 2-2.

And they weren't done there. Suarez used... the darker arts to draw a penalty in the the 81st minute, falling over Moussa Dembele to set up a Liverpool spot kick. And Steven Gerrard duly converted to put the hosts in front. The 3-2 score would last through three minute of injury time, leaving Spurs licking their wounds on the road back from the northwest.
