Southampton vs. Queens Park Rangers: Final score 1-2, QPR forwards bail out Julio Cesar

Clive Rose

Julio Cesar had another bad spill to gift Southampton a goal, but QPR's forwards did enough to bail him out and grab a huge win for their team.

Queens Park Rangers are still quite a long way away from pulling themselves out of the relegation zone, but their prospects of staying up look much brighter after their 2-1 away win against Southampton, a relegation rival who entered this week outside of the drop zone. The Saints have been poor defensively for most of the season, and Harry Redknapp's side took advantage of those problems.

Loic Remy, who picked up an unfortunate injury shortly after his hot start as a Ranger, fired QPR in front after 15 minutes. The goal came on what appeared to be a harmless long ball, but Danny Fox allowed Remy to win the race to the ball without much of a fight, then backed off him completely. Remy was unbelievably allowed to run into the box, then put a shot past Artur Boruc without much opposition.

Just before the halftime whistle, an error by Julio Cesar gifted Southampton a way back into the match. The Brazilian spilled a 25-yard strike by Jay Rodriguez and the defense in front of him failed to track Gaston Ramirez, who pounced on the rebound and chipped over Cesar to equalize.

The second half was a bit light on action before the winning goal was scored by Jay Bothroyd, in the 75th minute. Park Ji-Sung provided a spectacular assist, first winning a 50-50 ball with Maya Yoshida on the right wing, then directing a cross from the byline for Bothroyd to finish.

Southampton recorded quite a few shots on target in the closing minutes, but couldn't beat Julio Cesar as Rangers held on for a much needed win.
