CONMEBOL 2014 World Cup qualifying: Opportunity for Uruguay, Chile to move up

Julian Finney

With Venezuela going on the road to Argentina, both Uruguay and Chile could move up into automatic World Cup qualification places with victories on Friday.

With Ecuador idle and Venezuela up against a tough match away to Argentina, both Uruguay and Chile have a chance to make up some ground in their quest to return to the World Cup. The two teams both qualified for the 2010 edition of the tournament, but sit in fifth and sixth respectably, on 12 points. Uruguay is in the playoff spot, while Chile would be out of contention for a World Cup berth if the table held.

Things get started with Colombia vs. Bolivia, and Los Cafeteros will be favored to win and bolster their top four standing at home. Uruguay host a desperate Paraguay team in the second game of the day, with the visitors needing to start piling up points fast to remain relevant. Argentina-Venezuela follows, while Chile takes on Peru in Lima to close the night.

Schedule (all times ET)

Colombia vs. Bolivia - 4 p.m.
Uruguay vs. Paraguay - 6 p.m.
Argentina vs. Venezuela - 8 p.m.
Peru vs. Chile - 10 p.m.
