During the last World Cup qualifying cycle or the last Copa America, Paraguay would have been next to impossible to break down after taking an early lead. Unfortunately for fans of Paraguay, the days of Gerardo Martino's fantastically organized teams have passed, and their 1-0 lead turned into a 4-1 loss on Tuesday night in Quito. Ecuador simply had too much quality going forward for the visitors to handle.
Ecuador were well on top to start the match, but gave away a goal in the 15th minute in rather unlucky fashion. A poor clearance on a set piece allowed Luis Caballero to score, putting the home side in an early hole. They didn't take long to bounce back, though, and netted an equalizer through Felipe Caicedo in the 38th minute.
While the first half was a struggle for the hosts, they completely dominated the second half. Jefferson Montero finished off a nice move in the 50th minute to put his team ahead, and from then on, Paraguay were hopeless. Montero set up 'Chucho' Cristian Benitez for his country's third goal just four minutes later, all but locking up a win. For good measure, Montero completed a brace in the 75th minute, scoring on a stunning shot from outside the penalty area to add insult to injury for Paraguay.
