Bologna brushed aside fellow strugglers Cagliari 3-0 to move above their opponents and pull 11 points clear of the relegation zone.
Saphir Taider, Alessandro Diamanti and substitute Cristian Pasquato got the goals to register back-to-back home wins for Stefano Pioli's side. The Sardinians had Francesco Pisano sent off for a reckless challenge early in the second half.
It took just five minutes for the home side to break the deadlock. Taider's neat one-two with Alberto Gilardino resulted in the midfielder crashing a shot into the net from the edge of the box. Diamanti doubled the advantage, switching feet as he cut in from the right to curl a left footed shot into the far top corner, giving Michael Agazzi no chance.
Cagliari struggled to create many clear-cut chances and took almost half an hour to register a strike at goal. However, efforts from Marco Sau and Daniele Conti didn't even work Gianluca Curci, who had a relatively easy afternoon in the Bologna goal. After Manolo Gabbiadini shot straight at Agazzi just yards from goal, Cagliari self-destructed. Pisano was given a straight red card for a dangerous studs-up challenge on Archimede Morleo, making the visitors' task nigh on impossible.
Gilardino almost got in on the scoring, but sent his header wide. Frederik Sorensen then rattled the underside of the crossbar after heading on Davide Moscardelli's corner.
By this point, it was all one way traffic and within five minutes of coming on, Pasquato added a third deep in stoppage time. The substitute received the ball from Taider and drilled a right footed shot from outside the box into the top corner.
