Modric and Ronaldo have Madrid ahead 2-1

Update: Manchester United 1-2 Real Madrid, final. Madrid progress to Champions League quarterfinals.

Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo have fired Real Madrid into the lead with a pair of goals in a three minutes spain. Madrid are in the drivers seat now leading 3-2 on aggregate and United needing two goals to advance.

As you would expect Real Madrid set-up camp in the United half after Nani was sent off. Sir Alex Ferguson, realizing the task ahead of his team, jumped up and down on the sideline imploring United supporters to make noise and support their team.

There was another controversial moment in the 62nd minute after Raphael Varane's close range header was headed into the back of the net before it hit off Rafael's arm and spun clear of the goal. It wasn't an intentional handball by the defender but then again, his arm basically stopped a goal. None of the officials on and around the pitch saw the play or deemed it foul worthy and play went on.

Four minutes later Luka Modric, who'd come on for Arbeloa a few minutes before, created some space for himself just outside the United penalty area and fired a wicked shot through traffic and past David De Gea. Several United defenders were sitting deep in the box in front of Modric but none of them made a move to close him down.

In the 69th minute Madrid struck again. Gonzalo Higuain and Mesut Ozil palyed a nice one-two on the right side before Higuain sent a low cross that was tucked into the back of the net by a sliding Cristiano Ronaldo.

Everything has changed after that red card and there is going to be some major controversy if this result holds.

Nani sees red, United left with 10-men

Update: Manchester United 1-2 Real Madrid, final. Madrid progress to Champions League quarterfinals.

After neither side could break through in the first half, it only took three minutes for a goal to finally come in the second half. Sergio Ramos accidentally poked a Nani cross past Diego Lopez, putting United up 1-0 and forcing Real Madrid to be even more aggressive with their attack.

Madrid's possession increased after the goal but the match was changed in the 59th minute when the referee sent off Nani after he went for a high ball and cleated Álvaro Arbeloa in the side of the chest. That might sound bad but it didn't seem like a malicious foul when it happened and even the Madrid players weren't petitioning the referee for a call.

As Nani got back to his feet, the referee made his decision showing him a red card and leaving United to defense their lead with 10-men.

It's definitely a match changing moment and if Madrid come back to win this tie, it'll be a heated talking point for a long time to come. Jose Mourinho made a quick adjustment after the card removing Arbeloa and replacing him with Luka Modric to help crank up the pressure on United.

Sergio Ramos own-goal puts United ahead

Update: Manchester United 1-2 Real Madrid, final. Madrid progress to Champions League quarterfinals.

Sergio Ramos has scored at the beginning of the second half but for the wrong team.

After some good early pressure from Madrid, United's first attack of the second half yielded a positive result. United nearly scored in a bit of a scramble in front of the Madrid goal but the ball ended up rolling out towards the left side touchline where Raphael Varane looked poised to deal with it. Instead, Varane only managed to direct the ball right to Nani who crossed the ball back into the box.

Danny Welbeck appeared to get a slight touch on the ball but instead of rolling past the net, defender Sergio Ramos accidentally re-directed the ball past Diego Lopez and gave United the 1-0 lead.

It doesn't change much in terms of what Madrid need to do. They always needed a goal today to advance and they're still going to need a goal to keep their hopes alive now. The pressure is definitely on Jose Mourinho's side now, even more than it was before.

Danny Welbeck is giving Madrid's defense fits

Update: Manchester United 1-2 Real Madrid, final. Madrid progress to Champions League quarterfinals.

We're 30 minutes in at Old Trafford and after a fairly calm opening 15 minutes, Manchester United have cranked up the pressure thanks in large part to the work of Danny Welbeck.

Danny Welbeck's pace began causing problems for Real Madrid as the match moved past the quarter hour mark. A run down the left side led to a corner after Welbeck passed off to Nani whose cross was headed out near the far post by Fábio Coentrão.

Welbeck was back a minute later causing chaos before finding Ryan Giggs in the Madrid penalty area. Giggs' cross to Robin Van Persie was perfect and forced a solid defensive play by Sergio Ramos. On United's next attack, Welback and Nani played a nice one-two on the left wing before earning another corner. Despite all the chances, United never threatened Diego Lopez in goal.

In the 20th minute Nemanja Vidic's header on a corner kick slammed off the near post and fell right to Welbeck. His shot was stopped by Lopez but the linesman had rightly raised his flag as United had two players, including Welbeck, in an offside position.

Welbeck continued to bomb down the left side testing the Madrid defense, waiting for them to make a mistake. Sergio Ramos was up to the task though doing an excellent job of cutting off Welbeck's runs and making all the right decisions with his tackles and clearances.

Cristiano Ronaldo nearly broke through against the stout United defense in the 28th minute, getting behind the back line. Fortunately for United, his attempt was smothered and blocked.

Fairly quiet opening 15 minutes at Old Trafford

Update: Manchester United 1-2 Real Madrid, final. Madrid progress to Champions League quarterfinals.

Through 15 minutes of play, Real Madrid are in control of a game that's taking a while to get going, but Manchester United are starting to come into the match.

Real Madrid got an early chance in the 4th minute after Ryan Giggs took down Fábio Coentrão in prime Ronaldo striking distance. The Portuguese international stood over the ball with his usual tenacity and model-like pose and sent the ball right into the three man wall. Talk about a let down.

Madrid certainly quieted down Old Trafford a bit in the opening minutes thanks to having a majority of the ball and being calm and methodical with their build-up. There was no unnecessary urgency or rush from Madrid, they clearly have a plan and are content to wait and pick their spots while keeping organized defensively and preventing Manchester United from getting an easy, early goal.

Good plan.

Just before the 10th minute, Tom Cleverly and Cristiano Ronaldo made some contact on a 50/50 ball. The United midfielder stayed down for a minute, even gesturing towards the bench before getting back up and continuing.

Gonzalo Higuain did his best to make something out of nothing in the 11th minute, receiving the ball at the top of the United box and managing to dribble to the right and create some space despite there being four or five United players around him. His shot sailed well wide, but it was a nervy moment for the United defense.
