Colorado Rapids vs. Philadelphia Union postponed due to winter storm

A winter storm hit the Denver area and forced the Rapids vs. Union game to be postponed until Sunday.

For those of you who wish MLS would move to the international calendar, you better comes to terms with this: Colorado Rapids vs. Philadelphia Union has been postponed to Sunday at 3 p.m. ET due to a winter storm in Denver.

The Rapids has begun making preparations for a snowy match by painting the lines on the field orange and practicing with orange balls. The city has been hit with snow for the last couple days and the team had begun marketing the match as the fans' chance to create a #WinterFortress, but when the forecast called for Saturday to be the worst day of the storm, the team, in conjunction with the league, decided to postpone the match.

The Denver area is expected to get up to 18 inches of snow on Saturday and a blizzard warning has been issued so the team deemed to unsafe to ask the players, coaches, stadium staff and fans to travel to Dicks Sporting Goods Park for the match. The roads are expected to be plowed and cleared by Sunday, making it safer for all those involved.

Colorado has to be disappointed to have their home opener postponed, but those are the perils of moving the start of the season up further and further each season. With the season starting at the beginning of March this season, several cities were flirting with one bad, but not unprecedented storm forcing a postponement. The Rapids were the unfortunate ones to be hit by it first.

The postponed match will still be televised locally on Altitude and TCN Philadelphia, as well as nationally on MLS Live.
