Inter Milan vs AS Roma, Final Score 2-3: Coppa final an all Roman affair

Lazio and AS Roma will contest this year’s Coppa Italia final after the Giallorossi defeated Inter Milan 3-2 at the San Siro and 5-3 on aggregate.

Roma won the first leg 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico almost three months ago. They will now play their city rivals in the same stadium on May 26th in a mouthwatering Derby della Capitale showcase.

A brace from Mattia Destro and a third from Vasilis Torosidis cancelled out Jonathan's first half opener, which had given the Nerazzurri hope of turning the tie around. Ricky Alvarez added a late consolation for the home side.

Andrea Stramaccioni came into the game with a major selection headache. The suspensions of Alvaro Pereira and Fredy Guarin added to an ever growing injury list, which claimed Yuto Nagatomo and Walter Gargano at the weekend, along with Esteban Cambiasso in the pre-match warm-up. Jonathan came in to replace the Argentine in a makeshift line-up.

Roma were boosted by the return of Daniele De Rossi from injury, but missed Miralem Pjanic and suspended duo Nicolas Burdisso and Pablo Osvaldo.

Samir Handanovic was called into action in the first two minutes, flicking the ball away from Marquinho on the goalline, after cutting out Alessandro Florenzi's pass.

Inter levelled the tie and went ahead on away goals halfway through the first half. Jonathan - who wasn't even meant to be on the pitch started and finished a smart team move and great advertisement for one touch football. Running with the ball from midfield, the wing back picked up a backheel from Ricky Alvarez and layoff from Tommaso Rocchi, before running into the box and sending a low shot into the bottom corner past Maarten Stekelenburg.

Roma almost went back ahead in the tie, but a Marquinhos rocket deflected wide off Walter Samuel. Handanovic then pulled off a bodyblock to deny Destro from point blank range.

Just before the break, Juan Jesus flashed a grasscutter across goal, while Handanovic denied Florenzi from ten yards in stoppage time with a smart one handed save around the post.

Francesco Totti drilled wide at the start of the second half. Samuel then threw out a leg to block a Torosidis shot in the box. Roma equalised and regained control of the tie on 55 minutes. Erik Lamela threaded through for Destro, who lifted the ball over the onrushing Handanovic and into the net.

The visitors landed the killer blow on 69 minutes. De Rossi waited to play in Federico Balzaretti, and the substitute rolled the ball across the box for Destro to tap in his second of the night.

Torosidis rubbed salt in the wounds five minutes later, when his chip from the edge of the box found its way over Handanovic and into the net.

Roma were home and dry, but Alvarez reduced the arrears when his low shot from outside the box deflected off De Rossi and caught Stekelenburg flat-footed as it trickled over the line.
