MLS 2013, Week 8 preview and fixtures: An unlikely trio tops the Western Conference

Who's leading the West? You won't believe it.

Dallas, Chivas and Portland are the top three teams in the Western Conference. Seriously.

If you had that in your preseason predictions, either stop lying or ... nope, just stop lying.

Toronto FC vs. Houston Dynamo

Saturday, 4 p.m. ET - MLS Live

Toronto are for real! They have six points from six matches. That is the bar for being "for real" in Toronto.

Pick: Draw, 1-1.

Colorado Rapids vs. Seattle Sounders

Saturday, 6 p.m. ET - MLS Live

The Rapids have actually won a match this season (two, to be precise). They also have Deshorn Brown.

Pick: Colorado, 1-0.

New York Red Bulls vs. New England Revolution

Saturday, 7 p.m. ET - MLS Live

The one thing the Revs have going for them is their midfield. The one thing that the Red Bulls still can't figure out is their midfield. Also important, the Red Bulls are the Red Bulls, which is code for cursed.

Pick: Draw, 1-1.

FC Dallas vs. Vancouver Whitecaps

Saturday, 8:30 p.m. ET - MLS Live

At some point, the Whitecaps are going to win away. They're too good not to. But Dallas isn't a team that a struggling road team gets on track again.

Pick: Dallas, 2-0.

Chicago Fire vs. Columbus Crew

Saturday, 8:30 p.m. ET - MLS Live

The lamest rivalry to ever rivalry.

Pick: Snooze.

Real Salt Lake vs. Chivas USA

Saturday, 9 p.m. ET - MLS Live

As good as Chivas have been, they have only played one match away from the Home Depot Center so they aren't exactly road tested yet. Admittedly, they won their lone away match 4-1, but that was against the Fire. RSL is not the Fire.

Pick: Salt Lake, 2-1.

LA Galaxy vs. Sporting Kansas City

Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET - NBC Sports Network

Last week, the Galaxy had to go from a midweek contest in Monterrey, Mexico to a weekend contest at Dallas. This week, Sporting will go from New York on Wednesday to Los Angeles on Sunday. The Airline Miles Derby should be fun.

Pick: LA, 1-0.

D.C. United vs. Philadelphia Union

Sunday, 5 p.m. ET - ESPN2

Oh great, give the conspiracy theorists more reason to believe ESPN is secretly trying to kill MLS.

Pick: Nobody.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Portland Timbers

Sunday, 11 p.m. ET - UniMas

Even ignoring the Alan Gordon incident, the Quakes and Timbers played a very testy match on Sunday, which is why it's great that they get to square off again seven days later. Keep your mouths closed and your gloves up.

Pick: San Jose, 2-1.
