It was as comfortable and one-sided a game as you'll see, with Roma completely dominating Siena. A hat-trick from Pablo Osvaldo and a goal from Erik Lamela have seen the giallorossi put themselves in a commanding position for European qualification, while Siena drop deep into the relegation mire.
The game started as it would go on, which is to say Roma were in total control. It only took 12 minutes for Pablo Osvaldo to open the scoring, after he interchanged beautifully with Erik Lamela before chipping the ball over the top of Gianluca Pegolo.
It seemed like the goal would open the floodgates, as it was only three minutes before Roma's lead was doubled -- and it was a second excellent goal. Francesco Totti played a perfectly-weighted lob met in the area by Lamela, with the Argentine's low volley flashing into the bottom corner.
Siena were almost entirely restricted to harmless shots from distance, save for an effort from the edge of the area from Innocent Emeghara, whose powerful shot was tipped behind by Roma's stand-in keeper Bogdan Lobonț. The giallorossi responded with Osvaldo hitting the post just a couple of minutes later.
The hosts couldn't have been more comfortable if Siena coach Giuseppe Iachini offered them some hot cocoa and a giallorossi blanket, and inside the final five minutes of the first half they put the game beyond doubt. Some great strength from Alessandro Florenzi down the left saw him pull a low cross back into the area for Osvaldo, who rifled a shot in at the near post for 3-0.
The second half passed largely without incident, though Emeghara tested Lobonț with a curling effort inside the box after some lax Roma defending. With little over 20 minutes remaining Osvaldo pounced on a rebound off a Totti shot for four, wrapping up a comprehensive victory for the giallorossi.
The victory moves them up into the second and final Europa League place, albeit only a point ahead of Udinese. As for Siena, they've fallen into the relegation zone. With Palermo and Genoa both picking up wins this weekend, they suddenly look in a worryingly precarious position.
