Javier Zanetti appears to be facing eight months on the sidelines. Inter Milan manager Andrea Stramaccioni stated in his post-match press conference following Inter's 1-0 loss to Palermo on Sunday that he fears the Inter captain and Argentina legend has torn his Achilles tendon.
"I am not a medic, but a lesion to the Achilles tendon does sound serious. It's another heavy blow and one we really could've done without, because Zanetti's value to us is incredible. It's difficult to comment on a situation like this."
At the age of 39, it will be difficult for Zanetti to return to playing at the highest level. He will be 40 years old by the time next year's Serie A season begins, and due to the timing of the injury, it will be nearly impossible for him to be ready for the start of next season if the injury is as severe as feared.
Zanetti, who took the captain's armband at Inter back in 1999, is the club's all-time leading appearance leader. He has played in 834 games for the club, 78 more than the second-leading player in appearances. He's also the most capped player in Argentina's history.
