In a surprising turn of events for a club that has not won a game since Week 3, Sky Blue FC completely controlled possession in a deserved 2-0 win against the Seattle Reign. Refusing to surrender three points, Sky Blue stuck together on the field to complete a well-deserved victory with first half goals from Danesha Adams and Lisa De Vanna.
The Seattle Reign regularly employed a grade of physical play to make a mark on the game in the first 15 minutes but they would fizzle out shortly into the match some shaky defending. For the remainder of the game Sky Blue dictated the tempo.
The opening goal of the night came in the 30th minute following a free kick sent into the box by Christie Rampone. Michelle Betos broke into the crowd of players to punch the ball away, but instead of going clear, it landed at Adams' feet just outside the area. Adams wasn't about to turn down the gift, and lobbing the ball into an open net to give SBFC a 1-0 lead.
Sky Blue played the high-tempo game we saw in weeks one and two, connecting on passes and reading each other's intentions on the field. This ability to connect on passes resulted in their second goal less than four minutes after taking the lead. De Vanna dispossessed an unsupported Kate Deines to run into an open box and slide the ball past Betos and into the back of the net.
The visitors could have gotten back into the game. The first of two scoring opportunities for Seattle arrived in the 45th minute when Fishlock pushed Brittany Cameron out to the edge of the 18, but she couldn't direct the ball and sent it wide. Seattle's second big chance came late in the second half when Kiersten Dallstream snuck up behind three SBFC players to tip the ball into the lower right hand corner of the net, but Cameron's instincts surfaced and she managed to knock the ball out of harm's way.
That was enough to protect the clean sheet -- and the victory.
