A second-half capitulation at the Emirates has seen Wigan Athletic become the third and final team to be relegated from the Premier League in the 2012/13 season. They needed a win for any real hope of safety, and despite a spell where that didn't look out of the question, as soon as Arsenal scored their second goal the Latics had a meltdown, eventually losing 4-1.
It's a sad way to end an eight-year spell in the Premier League, but this was always how Wigan's top-flight adventure was going to end. They were light on cash and kept hemorrhaging their best players (Mohamed Diame and Victor Moses would have gone some way in seeing them safe this year) -- what did you expect would happen? At least they've gone out with a bang, capturing the FA Cup on Saturday and becoming the first Premier League team to win it while going down.
Aston Villa and Sunderland fans can now breathe safe, although this does rather take the drama out of the final weekend.
