Portland Thorns FC vs. Sky Blue FC: Final Score 0-1, Taylor Lytle hands Portland their first loss

Taylor Lytle was subbed on in the 78th minute and scored the winning goal as SBFC beat the Thorns in Portland.

Sky Blue FC's stayed strong against Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair, successfully shutting down Portland's attack and keep the game level until the 80th minute. At that point, Taylor Lytle took over, blasting a 30 yard shot past Karina LeBlanc to give SBFC the win and hand Portland their first loss of the year.

Three minutes into the game and Portland had already had two attempts on goal; the stage seemed set for a battering. But Sky Blue's defense adapted quickly, and would shut down the Thorn's attack for remainder of the match -- Christie Rampone once again stood out.

It took a little help from Brittany Cameron. Midway through the first half, Morgan escaped her markers and have a chance to go one on one with the goalkeeper, but Cameron shot off her line and got to the ball first. She was alert throughout, reading the Thorns attack and controlling her area well.

At the other end of the pitch, Katy Freels had plenty of the ball in decent positions but didn't have any luck converting, seeing a pair of long-rangers picked off by Karina LeBlanc and an effort from closer in deflected behind. Freels was most successful cog in the SBFC attack in the first half -- De Vanna, Danesha Adams, Foord and O'Hara were struggling to impose themselves on the Thorns.

The second half could have produced goals for the Thorns but their play was rushed due to the SBFC back line pressing their space and Cameron's quick feet between the posts.Thorns substitute Danielle Foxhoven provided a spark, charging up and down the flank to create chaos, but it wasn't enough to result in a goal mostly thanks to some weak finishing from Morgan.

It looked as though the match was going to finish 0-0, but Taylor Lytle wasn't having any of that. The game winning goal came from nothing. 80 minutes in, Lytle found herself closed down by both Foxhovan and Long, but worked herself half a yard of space and blasted a shot past LeBlanc.

The hosts tried to find the equalizer but the SBFC defense kept them at bay, limiting their chances very well. Portland did have a final opportunity to steal snatch a draw on the back of a free kick in the 92nd minute but the Angie Kerr strike that found Morgan was futile as she couldn't direct her header. With that miss, the Thorns were handed their first loss of the season.
