Mallorca's hopes of pulling off a great escape got a boost today with a 1-0 win for Los Bermellones over Real Betis. Tomer Hemed's goal midway through the first half proved enough as Mallorca continue their fight to avoid their first relegation in 16 seasons.
The win moves Mallorca off the bottom of the table, but they still remain three points from safety behind Real Zaragoza and Deportivo La Coruña. Betis, despite the loss, remain on track for a Europa League spot.
Mallorca were the stronger side from the start, putting Betis under a great deal of pressure. Victor Casadesus forced a tremendous save from Betis goalkeeper Adrian and Hemed hammered a follow-up volley off the cross bar. The pressure continued until Hemed broke through in the 21st minute, finishing off a rebound with a shot from close range.
