AS Roma vs. Lazio, 2013 Coppa Italia Final: Preview

Paolo Bruno

Calcio returns for one final time this season, in a Rome derby with the Coppa Italia at stake.

The Olimpico will again play host to one of the fiercest rivalries in Italian football this weekend, though with an added twist -- the Coppa Italia is at stake. Neither AS Roma or Lazio have enjoyed successful seasons, meaning they'll be even more desperate to end on a high and give their shirt designers a headache by winning the right to wear the tricolore roundel. Of course, there also remains a place available in the Europa League for the winner.

Having said that, it's simple Roman pride which will be more important for the fans. Lazio currently have the bragging rights in the Derby della Capitale, having won three of their last four meetings with the giallorossi. However, Roma finished a place above their rivals in the table this season, and really ought to have won their last derby back in April.

Roma have spent much of the last few days squabbling over their new club crest, though coach Aurelio Andreazzoli has more pressing concerns. There's talk he'll be shunted back to his position as a right-hand man for next season after taking over from the sacked Zdeněk Zeman on a temporary basis back in February. A Coppa win would make him that little bit more irreplaceable, and would at least give him a memento to wave around as he stomps out of the coach's office for the final time.

Andreazzoli will be able to select Francesco Totti after he was suspended for the final Serie A game of the season. Il Capitano has played in Rome derbies than anyone else, though has never scored in a cup meeting with Lazio. After such a great season, there's a good chance he'll finally open his account. Elsewhere, Daniele De Rossi, Federico Balzaretti, Marquinhos and Maarten Stekelenburg have all been injured of late, and are early doubts.

As for Lazio, their biggest concern is over the fitness of their midfield playmaker Hernanes, who missed the Aquile's last match. Bruno Pereirinha, Stefan Radu, Michael Ciani and Ogenyi Onazi are in doubt, though there's hope they'll return alongside the Brazilian. Louis Saha is unavailable.
