Uruguay vs. Nigeria, 2013 Confederations Cup: Halftime score 1-1 in an entertaining game

Robert Cianflone

Neither side has pulled away and both Uruguay and Nigeria will feel like the game is theirs for the taking in the second half.

Uruguay and Nigeria have both improved significantly from their opening games and are putting on an entertaining match in Salvador. Both teams have scored, though through very unlikely goal-scorers. Diego Lugano netted the opener for Uruguay, but John Obi Mikel hit back to level the match at 1-1 going into halftime.

The Uruguayans were dominant in the opening minutes leading up to their goal, with Edinson Cavani in particular looking dangerous. He constantly sat on the back shoulder of the defense and looked to run in behind, and played a part in the opening goal. On a low cross from Diego Forlan after a set piece, Cavani attempted to backheel the ball into the back of the net, but ended up unintentionally playing a great dummy. The ball fell to Lugano, who had an easy finish.

Nigeria's goal was a pretty one and it will have Chelsea supporters asking where Mikel's composure in front of the box has been for the last decade.

Ngagoal

Mikel hasn't scored in 186 Premier League games, but that's his fourth for his country in 50 appearances.

A win for Nigeria will see them and Spain lock up semifinal places. Uruguay has Tahiti coming up next, so they'll probably feel like they're the team in better shape if this match ends in a draw.
