Brazil prevail over Italy in a crazy game

Brazil defeated Italy to finish top of their group after a five-goal second half saw plenty of great play and controversy.

More goals and some controversey

Italy started the half nicely, but they were quickly undone by Brazil — first on Neymar's free kick and then by Fred, who completely outmuscled Giorgio Chiellini and beat Gianluigi Buffon.

Marclo deserves a ton of credit for the excellently placed long ball that landed right on Fred's foot, but the Brazilian striker made a great run to split the Italian defense. The pass was pretty special, but bringing the ball down with an excellent first touch, fighting off a foul from Chiellini and then composing himself for the finish was even better.

Italy pulled the game back to 3-2 thanks to a real mistake by the referee, who whistled a play dead for a penalty but then allowed play to continue as Chiellini scored on a loose ball in the Brazil area.

There was clearly a foul in the box on Mario Balotelli, and referee blew his whistle and pointed to the spot. The whistle caused players to stop, but the referee then decided to award Italy advantage and let play continue.

What a mess.

What is this Neymar dance?

I need help, internet. I'm out of touch. This doesn't look anything like samba. I don't recall seeing this in any music videos I've seen recently. Is he pretending to drive a car? Is he just really horrible at the Dougie? What is this?

Giaccherini scores, Neymar answers back

Italy got the second half off to a perfect start, at least from their perspective, evening the match a 1-1 thanks to a glorious assist from Mario Balotelli and an excellent finish from Emanuele Giaccherini.

Balotelli had his shirt pulled by Dante but still managed to get his foot up and direct the ball out left to Giaccherini, who raced into the Brazil area and launched a rising shot that beat Júlio César and tucked itself nicely in the side netting, just inside the far post.

Lovely play from both Ballot and Giaccherini, and suddenly the match was interesting again...well, for about two minutes.

Neymar was taken down right on the edge of Italy's box, giving the Brazilian star a chance to put a set piece on target...which, of course, he did brilliantly.

The key was Gianluigi Buffon's first step back towards the near post, as he expected Neymar's free kick to go over the wall. Instead, Neymar went for the far post and the momentary direction change by the Italian keeper gave him just enough space to put the ball past and give Brazil the lead back at 2-1.

All of sudden this is looking like a soccer match again!

The first half was brought to you by the word foul

There was nothing beautiful about the opening half between Brazil and Italy, but Dante was able to jump on a rebound in stoppage time to put Brazil ahead at the break.

Italy vs. Brazil: Lineups
