Paulinho sends Brazil to the final

It wasn't pretty, but Brazil did enough to get by South American rivals Uruguay and sail into the Confederations Cup final.

Paulinho scores the winner

Congrats on being a national hero, Paulinho. He netted the winning goal in Brazil's 2-1 victory over Uruguay with this brilliant header on a corner.

Paulinho is a pretty good goal-scorer for a fairly defensive central midfielder. This is his fifth goal in 16 appearances for Brazil.

Alvaro Gonzalez and Neymar are not friends

Alvaro Gonzalez does not seem to be a fan of Neymar.

El Matador makes it 1-1

Well, that's a surprising start to the second half. Uruguay have equalized against Brazil in the 48th minute, thanks to some absolutely horrendous defending. Uruguay did well to create the danger in the first place, but Brazil did an awful job of doing anything with one of their numerous chances to clear.

Luis Suarez had an initial shot blocked and the clearance attempt following that block failed. Thiago Silva, instead of trying again to boot the ball out of the box, played an extremely dangerous pass to Marcelo. The Brazil left back wasn't ready for it, but El Matador was.

It's been a surprisingly nightmarish day for the usually fantastic Thiago Silva and David Luiz, and suddenly this game looks very interesting.

Fred puts Brazil up

How Fred went from being a sold, but unspectacular striker at Olympique Lyonnais to being a key player for the Brazilian national team is anyone's guess, but he's on fire and has locked down his starting center forward position. He's now netted eight goals in his last 10 games in a Brazil shirt, including his team's first goal in their Confederations Cup semifinal against Uruguay, putting them up 1-0 in the first half.

The entire move was brilliant, with Paulinho playing a ball over the top of the Uruguay defense to Neymar, down the left side of the penalty area. Fernando Muslera charged out at him and appeared to get a piece of his chip across the box, but not enough to stop it from falling to Fred. His shot was slightly mishit, but in a way that made it impossible to clear off the line.

It's going to be tough for Uruguay to come back from this. They've been playing a very defensive game because their defenders simply aren't good enough to compete with Brazil while taking any risks going forward. The Uruguayan strikers can make goals from nothing, but they might have trouble getting the ball in the second half.

Julio Cesar says no

Uruguay was granted a gift in the opening 15 minutes of their Confederations Cup semifinal against Brazil, but they were unable to capitalize and the game remains scoreless.

Diego Lugano was taken down in the box by David Luiz, leading to the referee giving a penalty -- a no-doubter as Luiz executed a rugby tackle on Lugano to lead to the spot kick.

Julio Cesar came up huge with a save on Diego Forlan, though, to keep the penalty from causing too much of a difference.

The save by Cesar was a brilliant one. Usually saved penalties result from less than optimal shots placed nowhere near the corner, but Forlan's penalty wasn't a bad one. He appeared to have the lower right corner picked out well, but Cesar did brilliantly to get across and make the stop.

If it looked too good of a save to be a guess, that's probably because it was. It wouldn't be shocking if Brazil had stats on Uruguay's likely penalty takers and, since Julio Cesar played with Forlan at Inter Milan, he's probably seen hundreds of those in training.

Brazil vs. Uruguay: Lineups

Uruguay and Brazil are back to normal after some injuries and suspensions. Their lineups are as expected.

An all-CONCACAF semifinal in Minas Gerais

It's the Copa America match that should have been but never was, thanks to Mano Menezes and Paraguay. Brazil and Uruguay meet in an all-CONMEBOL semifinal.

Brazil expected to beat Uruguay and reach final

The Confederations Cup's South American sides meet in the tournament's semifinal on Wednesday, with Brazil hot favorites to beat Uruguay and reach the final.
