Spain advances over Italy on penalties

120 minutes of soccer and six rounds of penalties weren't enough to decide things between Spain and Italy. In the end, a miss by Leonardo Bonucci allowed Jesús Navas to send Spain into Sunday's final.

Italy-Spain to penalties: Live updates

Update: Spain 0-0 (7-6) Italy, final score - Match report

The heat and humidity in Fortaleza has taken its toll on Spain and Italy. The two teams played a fast and lively first half, with both teams counter attacking at pace, but the second half was a completely different story. Extra time wasn't much better, and penalties are required after a 0-0 draw.

Spain had the much better opportunities to score in extra time, regularly failing to convert decent half-chances with horrible shooting. Italy got close on one occasion, in the 93rd minute, with Emanuele Giaccherini hitting the post on a cross by Antonio Candreva. In 115th minute, Gianluigi Buffon deflected a shot by Xavi onto the post.

These two teams went to penalties in their Euro 2008 quarterfinal, with Spain coming out victorious, 4-2. Both of the goalkeepers playing in this match -- Iker Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon -- were between the sticks in that game. Daniele De Rossi is the only player on the pitch who missed a penalty on that day.

We'll update the penalty kicks as they happen below. Hit refresh on this post and you'll see the results of the penalties right here. After the shootout ends, we'll link our full game recap.

Xavi hits the post in the 115th minute

Xavi almost came up with the game-winner in the 115th minute for Spain, but Gianluigi Buffon denied him with an unbelievable save. The Italian goalkeeper did brilliantly to get anything on a hard, knuckling shot from Spain's playmaker and deflected it onto the post. Spain also had a brilliant follow-up effort, but couldn't convert.

Otmiss

The Spaniards have pushed harder for a winner in extra time than Italy, who seem to be holding on for penalties.

Doink.

Spain and Italy went a very, very long time without creating any kind of actual scoring chance. Then, in the third minute of extra time, Andrea Candreva hit a low cross to the back post that found Emanuele Giaccherini. Could he find the winner?

Nope

Doink.

Spain and Italy head to extra time

Update: Spain 0-0 (7-6) Italy, final score - Match report

Spain and Italy are headed to extra time in their Confederations Cup semifinal, thanks to some poor finishing and good defending on both ends. There have been exciting moments and plenty of chances, but the two teams are locked up at 0-0 after 90 minutes.

The best chances of the entire match came back-to-back in the 36th minute. Emanuele Giaccherini set up Christian Maggio with a cross to the back post, but Iker Casillas made a big save on his header. One minute later, Fernando Torres made a brilliant run and turn in the box to free himself, but screamed his shot wide of the far post.

While the first half was eventful, with both teams creating some half-chances, particularly on fast counters, the game slowed down considerably in the second half. The hot and humid weather in Fortaleza probably didn't help the teams to continue playing at a high pace. Both teams made substitutes in an attempt to liven up the match, but neither looked too much like scoring in the second half. Spain had the better chances of the two teams, but regularly squandered them with some very poor finishing.

The teams will now play two 15-minute extra time periods, and then go to penalties if they're still tied after 120 minutes of play.
