Roberto Martinez has always seemed like the most likely option to take over for David Moyes at Goodison Park, and that move has moved one step closer to fruition today with Everton successfully negotiating compensation with newly-relegated Wigan Athletic:
Wigan owner Dave Whelan says compensation has been agreed with Everton for manager Roberto Martinez. More on #SSN— Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) June 3, 2013
Although Martinez's spell with the Latics, bar the surprising FA Cup win against Manchester City last month, has mostly seen the club struggle, his side were performing far higher than one might have expected given their meagre means, and it's a minor miracle they stayed in the Premier League for as long as they did. That overachievement matches the popular narrative around David Moyes, who routinely did battle with the Premier League's big guns and acquitted himself fairly well every time. At least Martinez will be used to a small transfer purse!
