City vs. Newcastle: Lineups

The first weekend of the Premier League season concludes today with Manchester City hosting Newcastle in a battle of the league favorites and a team hoping to avoid the relegation scrap they found themselves in a year ago.

Today also marks the debut of Manuel Pellegrini as the City manager, and he's picked a rather straight forward team in his first outing. New signings Fernandinho and Jesus Navas both start in the midfield for the Citizens, while old hands Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero get the nod up front.

For Newcastle, Yohan Cabaye is noticeably absent, not just from the starting lineup, but from the bench as well. He has been the subject of transfer rumors of late, especially lately with Arsenal being linked to the Frenchman, and his absence from the team today will only intensify the speculation that he is set to leave Newcastle.

Manchester City: Joe Hart; Gael Clichy, Joleon Lescott, Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta; David Silva, Fernandinho, Yaya Toure, Jesús Navas; Edin Dzeko, Sergio Aguero.

Newcastle: Tim Krul, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Fabricio Coloccini, Steven Taylor, Mathieu Debuchy; Cheik Tiote, Jonås Gutierrez; Yoan Gouffran, Moussa Sissoko, Hatem Ben Arfa; Papiss Cisse.

Swansea City vs. Manchester United: Lineups

The defending champions are starting their season at the Liberty Stadium, and despite Sir Alex Ferguson's absence not much has changed for Manchester United. Wayne Rooney is still out of favour. They still would probably be ok with swapping midfields with their opponents. And they're still probably going to win anyway because they're Manchester United and that's what they do.

Swansea City, meanwhile, feature a pair of new additions to their centre -- Jonjo Shelvey's been brought in from Liverpool and Jose Canas will be holding alongside Leon Britton. It's hardly the ideal fixture with which to start the season, but on paper this looks a fair fight.

Swansea City starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Michel Vorm; Ben Davies, Ashley Williams, Chico Flores, Angel Rangel; Leon Britton, Jose Canas; Wayne Routledge, Jonjo Shelvey, Nathan Dyer; Michu.

Manchester United starting lineup (4-3-3): David de Gea; Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jones; Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley; Danny Welbeck, Robin van Persie, Antonio Valencia.

Liverpool vs. Stoke City: Lineups

Luis Suarez is absent for Liverpool's opening game of the 2013-14 Premier League season, with new signing Iago Aspas starting in his stead.

The Spaniard lines up with Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge in a three-man attack for the reds, while Kolo Toure and Simon Mignolet are the other new additions to Brendan Rodgers' side to be handed starts.

Stoke, meanwhile, have only Erik Pieters as a debutant in their team, but there is a place for Wilson Palacios, who found starts hard to come by under Tony Pulis' regime. Peter Crouch starts up front, with Jonathan Walters and Matthew Etherington in support.

Liverpool starting line-up (4-3-3): Simon Mignolet; Glen Johnson, Jose Enrique, Kolo Toure, Daniel Agger; Lucas, Jordan Henderson, Steven Gerrard; Philippe Coutinho, Iago Aspas, Daniel Sturridge.

Stoke City starting line-up (4-3-3): Asmir Begovic; Erik Pieters, Robert Huth, Ryan Shawcross, Geoff Cameron; Glenn Whelan, Steven N'Zonzi, Wilson Palacios; Matthew Etherington, Jonathan Walters, Peter Crouch.
