Arsenal vs. Aston Villa: Preview and TV schedule

Chris McGrath

Arsenal have several injury concerns as they open their Premier League season against Aston Villa.

Arsenal have been typically quiet in the transfer market so far, and may be without their only summer signing as they kick off their Premier League campaign. French striker Yaya Sanogo has picked up a hamstring injury, and is an early doubt. Having suffered from a string of injuries over the last few seasons, the Gunners will anxious to see him back quickly.

Elsewhere, defender Thomas Vermaelen and midfielder Abou Diaby are both definitely out with back and knee injuries respectively. Mikel Arteta picked up a thigh injury in preseason and will miss the next six weeks. Midfielder Aaron Ramsey is doubtful having withdrawn from the Wales squad with an ankle injury, while full-back Nacho Monreal could miss out with a back problem.

In contrast, Paul Lambert has almost a full-strength Villa squad to choose from -- including a string of summer arrivals. He added several young players to his squad this window, with defenders Jores Okore and Antonio Luna, winger Aleksandar Tonev and striker Nicklas Helenius among those hopeful of debuting. With the exception of Charles N’Zogbia and Chris Herd, the Villans are fully fit.
