CAS reject Fenerbahçe and Metalist Kharkiv appeals

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has rejected Fenerbahçe and Metalist Kharkiv's appeals against their bans from UEFA club competitions.

UEFA has "welcomed" the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport to reject Fenerbahçe and Metalist Kharkiv's appeals against their bans from UEFA club competitions. The teams had hoped to have UEFA's initial decision overturned, though CAS has sided with the European administrative body to exclude the clubs on match-fixing grounds.

The decision means Ukrainian club Metalist are disqualified from UEFA competitions for the 2013/14 season, after their former sporting director, Yevhen Krasnikov, was handed a five-year ban by CAS for allegedly fixing a league match with Karpaty Lviv in 2008.

Turkish side Fenerbahçe -- who were knocked out of the Champions League playoffs by Arsenal last night -- have been expelled from this season's Europa League and the next UEFA club competition they qualify for. That comes after club officials allegedly helped fix matches during their 2010-11 league title run.

A UEFA Emergency Panel will meet on Thursday afternoon to decide who will replace Fener in the Europa League.
