The club told the Associated Press that the anemia is due to Neymar's tonsil operation from earlier in the summer and that they expect him to continue training normally with the team as he undergoes treatment.

Anemia is a decrease in number of red blood cells or less than the normal quantity of hemoglobin in the blood which can lead to exhaustion and shortness of breath during physical exertion. While severe anemia can lead to cardiac problems as the body compensates for the blood not carrying enough oxygen to the body.

Neymar's situation is not expected to be serious.

Barcelona are scheduled to play friendlies against Thailand in Bangok on Wednesday and Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. Neymar's availability for those matches has yet to be announced by the team.
