Shakhtar Donetsk sign Bernard from Atlético Mineiro

Shakhtar have continued their impressive South American spending spree, adding young winger Bernard to their ranks.

Shakhtar Donetsk have announced Bernard has signed a five-year contract at the Donbass Arena, with the 20-year-old costing the Ukrainian champions €25 million. The winger was part of the Atlético Mineiro side that won the Copa Libertadores this year, as well as the Brazil team that tasted success at the Confederations Cup.

He was reportedly subject to interest from other sides around Europe, though has joined a Shakhtar team where he'll slot into a first-team position formerly occupied by his compatriot Willian, the left-winger having moved to Anzhi Makhachkala in January.

Bernard is Shakhtar's fourth Brazilian arrival of the window, after midfielders Wellington Nem, Fernando and Fred. Looking to replace their stars Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Fernandinho, who left for Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City this summer, Shakhtar have once again turned their attention to South America, also signing young Argentine striker Facundo Ferreyra from Vélez Sarsfield.

Serving as a bridge into European football for many highly-rated South American talents, Shakhtar should be an interesting team to watch again this season.
