Inter Milan vs. Juventus: Final score 1-1, Open game ends all square

Claudio Villa

An exciting game at the San Siro has seen the first Derby d'Italia match of the season end all square.

There was much excitement in Saturday's Derby d'Italia when Inter Milan and Juventus both played attacking football in an entertaining fixture. The usual derby caution was thrown to the wind and two late goals from Mauro Icardi and Arturo Vidal ensured both teams went home with a point.

The match got off to a lively start with both sides playing surprisingly openly and looking to take the game to their opponents. There was little in the way of chances created from open play, however, with Gianluigi Buffon forced into the first real save of the match after Yuto Nagatomo volleyed a corner towards goal just short of 15 minutes into the match.

Five minutes later, Arturo Vidal had a good shout for a penalty turned down after the referee adjudged the Chilean to have handed the ball. Juventus shaded possession, though had little to show for it as they struggled to break through the disciplined nerazzurri ranks. A rare scare for the hosts came just after the half-hour mark when Paul Pogba broke through the defence and received an Andrea Pirlo pass in the area. Goalkeeper Samir Handanovič kept out his shot from a tight angle, though.

Inter responded with a good chance of their own before the halftime break after Ricky Álvarez slipped Saphir Taïder through on a quick counter-attack, only for the Algerian to fire straight at Buffon when Álvarez was better placed in the box. The nerazzurri had another good chance straight from the restart, though Rodrigo Palacio's free header was tame and eventually comfortably caught by Buffon.

Juventus were reduced to counter-attacks, unable to exert total control as usual. Just short of the hour, Arturo Vidal fired wide from a tight angle after Carlos Tévez's through-pass was slightly over-hit. Inter coach Walter Mazzarri was none too impressed with his side's momentary lapse in defensive concentration.

Just over ten minutes later, however, the coach had reason to celebrate after his offensive introduction of striker Mauro Icardi in place of midfielder Taïder paid dividends. Álvarez nipped the ball from Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini and Icardi made a great run in between the bianconeri defenders. With a perfect pass, Álvarez played Icardi in and the young Argentine swept the ball beyond Buffon to open his account for his new team.

Sadly for the home crowd, their celebrations were short-lived. Inter had been ahead just a couple of minutes when Vidal netted a spectacular equaliser, receiving Kwadwo Asamoah's low ball from the left and calmly slotting into the bottom corner on the turn. The Old Lady had awoken.

Tévez almost put them ahead seconds later, driving a low shot wide of the far post, before Handanovič made a great save on a Vidal header inside the area. Maurizio Isla inexplicably missed the rebound. Juventus couldn't make their late surge count, and Inter held on for a deserved point.
