Lazio vs Chievo Verona, Final Score 3-0: Eagles end their Chievo curse

A clinical first half display helped Lazio to a 3-0 victory over Chievo Verona. The win is the Biancocelesti’s first over the Flying Donkeys at the Stadio Olimpico in ten years.

Antonio Candreva, Luis Cavanda and Senad Lulic did the damage for the Eagles, who converted all three of their first half chances to leave Chievo shellshocked.

Lazio came into the game with a midfield crisis. Lucas Biglia was injured and joined suspended pair Hernanes and Stefano Mauri on the sidelines. Stefan Radu was also missing from the backline, so Cavanda and Ederson came into the side. Chievo missed Dario Dainelli.

Lazio hit the front on eight minutes, albeit with a bit of good fortune. Ederson dispossessed Ivan Radovanovic and played in Candreva, whose shot took a wicked deflection off Bostjan Cesar en route to deceiving Chievo goalkeeper Christian Puggioni.

Lazio lost Giuseppe Biava to a foot injury on 15 minutes. Chievo's Boukary Drame was also in the wars, but he shook off a leg injury to resume the field. Lazio's ultras deliberately filed into the Curva Nord late in protest at the club's lack of transfer activity during the summer window.

Alberto Paloschi tested Federico Marchetti with a screamer. The shot was parried and Abdoulay Konko was on hand to clear the rebound before Cyril Thereau could pounce. Chievo had nine first half corners compared to Lazio's zero, but couldn't make any of them count.

The visitors paid the price when Lazio doubled their lead on 38 minutes against the run of play. Luis Cavanda's cross from the byline was initially too deep, but the full back stayed forward as Cristian Ledesma pumped the ball back into the box. Puggioni came out and flapped at air, allowing Cavanda to meet the ball at full stretch and slide it into an empty net from a difficult angle.

Lazio rubbed salt in the wound and added a third goal just four minutes later. Ogenyi Onazi released Lulic, who kept his cool one-one-one with Puggioni to stroke the ball past him and into the far corner.

The home side had  chances to add to their lead after the break. Miroslav Klose turned Candreva's cross over, while Ederson curled an effort wide. Cesar prevented Ederson from nodding in at the far post with a last ditch headed clearance.

Puggioni could only watch as Candreva's pinpoint lob rattled the crossbar. Klose was desperate for a goal, but the Chievo shot stopper thwarted the German's close range header.

Chievo substitute Marcelo Estigarribia stung Marchetti's palms with a vicious volley, before Klose went close again, sliding in on the turn to volley wide. Marchetti denied Paloschi late on, pulling off a point blank save to keep out a header.
