Chelsea vs. FC Basel: Preview and TV schedule

Clive Brunskill

Having knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League at the group stages in 2011, Swiss champions Basel are hoping for another giantkilling.

Basel have won the Swiss Super League four seasons in a row, and have assembled a squad capable of causing some of Europe's bigger teams problems. Nowhere has that been more evident than in the Champions League a couple of seasons ago, when a win at home to Manchester United sent the Red Devils out of the group stages and into the Europa League.

They'll be looking for a repeat performance away at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, though chances of another upset are slim. Chelsea boss José Mourinho will be eager to see his side bounce back from a surprise defeat to Everton on the weekend, and shouldn't pull any punches with his team selection. He'll be without Ramires and Michael Essien who are suspended and ineligible respectively, though otherwise he should have a full-strength tea to choose from.

Basel don't have any early concerns, and will line up with several talented youngsters the Blues will have to keen an eye on. They may have lost Austrian defender Aleksandar Dragović this summer, though young Swiss international Fabian Schär has stepped into the breach excellently. Lively Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah could also prove to be a handful down the right for Ashley Cole.
