Manchester City vs. Manchester United: Halftime score 2-0, hosts well in control

Michael Regan

This game was fun until Sergio Aguero scored. Then it wasn't.

Manchester United trail their cross-town rivals 2-0 at halftime, and deservedly so. It's been extremely comfortable for Manchester City thus far, who haven't really ever looked like conceding. The defending by the Red Devils on both goals was suspect and the match has been a disaster in every area of the pitch for them so far.

City had all of the possession leading up to the opening goal, scored by Sergio Aguero in the 16th minute. Aleksandar Kolarov set it up with a cross after he lost Antonio Valencia and beat Chris Smalling to the endline. Patrice Evra failed to track the run of Aguero and the Argentine volleyed home from six yards.

City backed off a bit at that point and allowed United to have a bit more of the ball, which the visitors did very little with. Their frustration showed as Wayne Rooney picked up a yellow card for persistent fouling in the 30th minute, going into the book after his fourth infraction of the evening.

Just before the break, City created a corner with one of their few quick and direct counter-attacking attempts after their goal, and they made the most of it. Alvaro Negredo won the header off Samir Nasri's corner, flicking the ball into Yaya Toure. No one marked the Ivorian, who tapped in to make it 2-0. Watch the goal below, via @FeintZebra on Twitter.

It's been an awful performance so far for United, and it's tough to see how they'll get back into this game. They have some weapons on the bench in Shinji Kagawa and Javier Hernandez, but it's going to take some bad mistakes by City for them to make a serious difference.
