La Liga, Week 5: Sevilla is sinking quickly after yet another loss

David Ramos

Sevilla remained winless in the league this season and dropped to last place in the league. Meanwhile at the top of the table, status quo remained in place.

Let's quickly wrap up the happenings on week five in Spain before week six begins tomorrow and this mildly insane stretch of league games for 11 straight days lumbers on without us.

The biggest piece of news coming from the the match week is Sevilla's continued struggles. The Sevillistas were beaten 3-1 by Valencia and remain win-less on the season. Worst still, they're not just in the relegation zone, they're dead last in 20th place. It's still very early and they can certainly turn their fortunes around, but the longer this poor starts goes the more pressure Unai Emery is going to be under. There will likely be a breaking point for the Sevilla board, we're just not sure when that is.

Villarreal came back down to earth ever so slightly with a scoreless draw against Celta Vigo. It's not a horrible result for the Yellow Submarine to get a point away but after their quick start, they likely expected more. Real Sociedad followed up their disappointing Champions League loss with a lackluster scoreless draw against Malaga. La Real's offense just can't seem to get on track but on the upside, the defense is playing fairly well

At the top of the table Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid all won, so there's not much to report form up in the rarefied air.

Here's a recap of all the matches from week five in Spain.

Osasuna 2-1 Elche

Real Sociedad 0-0 Malaga

Almeria 2-2 Levante

Rayo Vallecano 0-4 Barcelona

Real Valladolid 0-2 Atletico Madrid

Real Betis 0-0 Granada

Celta Vigo 0-0 Villarreal

Real Madrid 4-1 Getafe

Valencia 3-1 Sevilla

Espanyol 3-2 Athletic Bilbao
