There wasn't much football to be seen in this match between Genoa and Inter. Heavy rain and an awful pitch made it impossible for players to show anything except their ability to stay on their feet when it seemed physically impossible not to fall down.
Thanks to the weather, there's little to discuss about this match. There were a few chances on both sides, but most came after strange or even comical situations caused by the puddles of water on the pitch. In the first half, Jonathan had a couple decent chances, ones that resembled actual football, when he was served by Esteban Cambiasso with a great through ball, but Mattia Perin saved his shot from inside the box. A few minutes later, he was almost in the same position, grabbing a ball from Diego Milito, but the Brazilian wingback sent it over the bar. Alberto Gilardino had one on one situation with Samir Handanovic... and was defeated by the pitch. He forgot the ball in the small lake on the edge of Inter's box.
There were a lot of defensive mistakes on both sides, understandable in those sorts of conditions. However, that won't make it any easier for Walter Mazzarri to sleep after the goal his team conceded. A cross from Luca Antonini found Luca Antonelli all alone in the box, making it easy enough to put the ball past Handanovic for the only goal of the match.
It's a rare win for Genoa against Inter and one they'll certainly be celebrating tonight. But Mazzarri's woes continue, with nerazzurri still looking for a win in 2014. With just one win in their last eight matches, how long until Interisti get fed up?
