Manchester City make waves with Mangala chase

Jamie McDonald

Manchester City are going after £35 million-rated defender Eliaquim Mangala from Porto.

Eliaquim Mangala is one of the most coveted young defenders in the world. The 22-year-old, who's been at Porto for two-and-a-half seasons, has been linked to the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, but it may well be Machester City who come up trumps in the chase for the highly-rated centre half.

If the Premier League leaders want to pick up Mangala, who made his full debut with France in 2013, they'll have to put out something on the order of £35 million to do so. Porto are a notoriously difficult club to deal with on deadline day, and negotiating a significantly lower price probably isn't on the cards, but Mangala could well be worth the money, especially with young centre backs at a premium at the moment (Chelsea's recent capture of Kurt Zouma has reduced the pool even further).

Is this going to happen? That there's noise at all is testament to the vast resources at City's disposal, but even ridiculous amounts of money might not get the deal done on the final day.
