DFB-Pokal 2014 quarterfinal preview: Are there any upsets remaining?

Stuart Franklin

The DFB Pokal quarterfinals begin on Tuesday. Are there any upsets remaining in the competition?

We're down to the quarterfinals in the DFB Pokal, and German football has decided to grace us with four interesting matches. I say "interesting", because the matches may not necessarily be intriguing, and for some reason the DFB decided to have one game on Tuesday and three on Wednesday.

The four matches see relatively heavy favorites taking on underdogs. The first, second, third and sixth place teams in the Bundesliga will face the eleventh, twelfth and seventeenth place Bundesliga clubs and the third 2.Bundesliga club. Luckily for the underdogs, only one of them has to travel away from home. Poor Kaiserslautern.

The expectation will be that that we'll have the four top teams advancing to the semifinals. Borussia Dortmund, Wolfsburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich should all win their matches. I have the least confidence in Wolfsburg, but that confidence is still over 50%. That's kind of not fun for the neutral fan, so I'm sorry neutral fan.

Expect the favorites to go through into the next round of the Pokal to set up the most anticipated semifinals in quite some time.
