For the first time in 18 years, Atlético Madrid sit in the top spot in La Liga thanks to their 4-0 victory over Real Sociedad on Sunday. David Villa gave his side a lead late in the first half, while Diego Costa and João Miranda secured the result with goals two minutes apart in the second half. Newly signed Diego Ribas added a fourth right before stoppage time.
While it didn't result in the opening goal, Diego Costa's bulldozing run from near midfielder in the 3rd minute is worth mentioning. Costa's strength and determination helped him fight off at least three defenders, all while running full speed and keeping control of the ball. Ultimately his shot was caught by goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, though it might have been going a bit wide.
After having a goal correctly disallowed earlier for being offside, David Villa put Atléti in front in the 38th minute. A poorly time giveaway by Carlos Martinez started the counter attack as Emiliano Insúa moved the ball out left to Diego Costa who wasted no time centering back to David Villa who directed it past Bravo.
The goalscorer left the match just three minutes later with an apparent hamstring injury.
While Atleéti controlled the first half, Real Sociedad were on top as the teams began the second half. In fact, La Real looked like a different team, pinning Atléti back and creating plenty of opportunities. The goal wouldn't come though and in the 72nd minute, Diego Costa struck like a lighting bolt on a sunny day.
Raúl García's perfectly time long ball over the top found Diego Costa in stride as the forward broke La Real's offside trap and raced in on goal all alone. Bravo did his best to limit Costa's options but the striker was not to be denied, beating Bravo to his right and doubling the Atléti lead.
Two minutes later João Miranda powered over several La Real players in the middle of the box to head home a corner kick, extending the Atléti lead to 3-0 and ensuring they'd end the round in first place.
Just to add some icing to the cake, Diego Ribas scored in his first game after returning to Atléti on loan from Wolfsburg.
