Southampton vs. Liverpool: Final score 0-3, Reds to second

Luis Suarez starred again as Liverpool defeated Southampton to go second.

Just four games after Brendan Rodgers declared that his side were out of the title race, they've surged all the way up into second place and are very much back in the title race after Saturday's results. Southampton was Saturday's victim, falling 2-0 at St. Mary's as Liverpool recorded their fourth consecutive league victory.

The opening goal was an unfortunate one for Southampton, coming off a deflected clearance. They looked like getting the ball away in the 16th minute after a poor touch by Daniel Sturridge, but Jack Cork kicked the ball off Jose Fonte and it bounced into the path of Luis Suarez. He did as he's known to do, making the most of the chance and scoring.

Southampton were the better side in the latter part of the second half, but failed to take their opportunities. Adam Lallana nearly equalized in the 31st minute when Rickie Lambert set him up for a shot inside the box, but the tricky Saints winger struck the near post. Jay Rodriguez found himself in a similar spot in the 43rd minute, but his effort was stopped by Simon Mignolet.

It looked like anyone's game heading into the middle of the second half when Liverpool made a decisive substitution, bringing on Raheem Sterling for Philippe Coutinho. The young Englishman made an instant impact in the 58th minute, executing the perfect late run into space to get on the end of a square ball by Suarez and scoring just a minute after coming on.

Liverpool calmly held onto their lead heading into stoppage time and added insult to injury with the last kick of the game. Suarez was hauled down in the penalty area and Steven Gerrard converted, adding to an impressive win.
