San Lorenzo 1-1 Union Española
The hosts got off to a great start, but couldn't hold on for all three points. Mauro Matos scored the opener for San Lorenzo in the 21st minute after wonderkid Angel Correa surged into the box and dribbled through a sea of defenders, but Union Española fought back. Gustavo Canales snatched a big road point for his team with his 83rd minute goal, tapped in off a knockdown header by Sebastian Jaime. These teams sit third and fourth in a tight Group 2, out of qualification spots because of the next result.
Independiente del Valle 2-1 Botafogo
Independiente del Valle is up to second, above San Lorenzo on goal differential, after this win. Christian Nuñez put the Ecuadorians up in the 26th minute, finishing off a through ball by Mario Rizotto. Botafogo struck back with a goal by Bolivar off a corner in the 59th minute, but Independiente would come through with a winner in stoppage time. Junior Sornoza was the hero, hitting a rocket from 30 yards to win it.
Nacional (PAR) 2-2 Atletico Mineiro
Atletico Mineiro will feel good about going through Group 4 in first place after pulling off a draw away to their biggest competition. Marcos Melgarejo took advantage of some atrocious defending to put Nacional up early, but Atletico Mineiro had the lead before the half-hour mark. Josue leveled in the 22nd minute off a pass from Ronaldinho and Jo gave the visitors the lead just five minutes later. Nacional grabbed an equalizer from the penalty spot in the 87th minute, but never found a winner. Atletico Mineiro now sit top on seven points, three ahead of Nacional.
Flamengo 2-2 Bolivar
Flamengo is not in good shape if they're drawing at home to Bolivar. They'll now be significant underdogs when they make the trip to La Paz to play in the same stadium that had Velez Sarsfield -- a better side than Flamengo -- sucking wind by the hour mark on Tuesday. Leon already has their trip to La Paz out of the way and has two home games during the second half of the group stage, so they might have a top-two spot in Group 7 sealed up before they go away to Flamengo on the final day.
The hosts dropped points here in the least flattering way possible, conceding first before taking the lead, then giving it away. This game ended on the most sour note possible, with Bolivar defender Edemir Rodriguez suffering a gruesome leg injury in stoppage time.
Zamora 2-1 Santa Fe
It's tough to see Zamora getting to the knockout stage, but they made Group 4 quite a bit more interesting with this win. Juan Falcon won a penalty for Zamora's opener with a serious dive, and Pedro Ramirez converted. Jonathan Copete hit back in the 72nd minute with a goal off a turnover and a brilliant through ball by David Ferreira, but it wasn't good enough for a point. Falcon scored a winner in the 84th minute off a brilliant turn and finish from 15 yards.
