van Persie leads United to 3-0 victory

Robin van Persie has had a quiet season, but he came alive with a hat trick at a crucial time on Wednesday.

van Persie completes a hat trick

Last year's spectacular campaign gave way to a pretty miserable 2013-14 season for Robin van Persie, but he's broken out of his shell to produce his best performance of the year when his team needed him most. The Flying Dutchman has scored a hat trick for Manchester United after just 52 minutes at Old Trafford on Wednesday, putting them 3-2 up on aggregate against Olympiacos.

Van Persie's first goal came from a penalty that he drew and his second was a tap-in from open play, set up by Wayne Rooney. His third was this absolute beauty.

Not only has van Persie been great, he's creating chances and scoring in multiple ways. United are now in control, but Olympiacos only need one goal to reclaim control of the tie.

RVP levels at Old Traffod

Manchester United have erased their first leg deficit against Olympiacos, and head into halftime level on aggregate and on away goals. With the last kick of the first half, Robin van Persie turned in a square ball from Wayne Rooney for his second goal of the night, tying things up at 2-2.

The defending here was very poor from the visitors, but David Moyes won't mind. He'll probably be thrilled that van Persie and Rooney are linking up at all, since they've been so poor at linking up during United's slump.

RVP penalty has United within one

It's game on at Old Trafford. A nervy start that featured chances at both ends and a nasty eye injury to Antonio Valencia has turned into one that Manchester United are very much in control of. They've scored to take the lead, but they still need another to level up their tie with Olympiacos.

Robin van Persie drew and converted a penalty for the goal, though he didn't exactly force Jose Holebas into the foul. He got steamrolled from behind, then stepped up to curl a perfect shot into the side of the net.

One down, one to go for United. And two to go if they want to win outright.

United vs. Olympiacos preview: Embarrassing?

It's not like things can get a lot worse for Manchester United. Failure to win this tie wouldn't be as bad as the weekend's result.
