Ronaldo equalizes for Madrid

Everything was going very well for Atletico Madrid on Sunday until the 83rd minute. They've been excellent defensively, but have made a couple of errors, and Real Madrid has managed to capitalize on both of them. This one was committed by Mario Suarez, and the man in position to capitalize was Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo's anticipation and finish were great, but this goal doesn't happen without Suarez's mistake. It was a bad one, and very easily avoidable.

Atleti assistant goes nuts

Calls have not been going Atletico Madrid's way in the Madrid Derby. They should have had a pair of penalties, but have been denied on both occasions, and they've picked up a few soft reds. Diego Simeone probably wanted to get in the referee's face himself, but might have been concerned with the message that would send and would like to stick around to make tactical adjustments, so he improvised.

He sicked assistant German Burgos on the referee. The results were glorious.

Burgos, if you didn't know, is a former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper and has been Simeone's assistant for three years, in three different countries. He doesn't exactly have a reputation for this sort of thing and isn't a random rogue assistant -- he's Simeone's right-hand man. It would be surprising if this was an emotional reaction, not a planned tactic.

Also, applause to Simeone for the spectacular dismissive wanking motion.

Koke levels for Atleti

The Madrid Derby has been absolutely thrilling thus far, and thanks to Koke, it's now everyone's game. Atletico Madrid survived multiple early setbacks -- a Real Madrid goal off a defensive error, a bad no penalty call and a big Real chance that required a miracle save -- but they're back in the match. Check out Koke's gorgeous finish.

Given how good Real Madrid have been recently, an Atleti collapse after they conceded just three minutes into the game wouldn't have been shocking. Instead, they're very much back in the match and look like they could potentially get all three points to turn the title race into an even three-way battle.

Atleti denied clear penalty

Atletico Madrid should have had a penalty and a great chance to draw level with Real Madrid early in their derby match, but referee Carlos Delgado Ferreiro saw something different. Sergio Ramos appeared to bring down Diego Costa in the box, but nothing was given.

Arda Turan was the Atleti player who took the no-call the worst, and he was booked for his outburst. The hosts continue to trail and need to bounce back quickly from a couple of huge setbacks.

Benzema capitalizes on Atleti error

Real Madrid look like they might be sailing to a La Liga title. Europe's biggest game this weekend has already been turned on its head by Karim Benzema, who put Los Merengues up on Atletico Madrid after just three minutes of play.

The thing with offside traps is that they're utterly destroyed if one player switches off for half a second. In this case, that was Atleti left back Felipe Luis. Benzema should have been caught offside, but instead, he had a tap-in. Diego Simeone will probably be less than pleased with one of his defenders losing focus just three minutes into a massive derby.
